MYSO Senior Kamilah Brown


Kamilah is a highly-driven student of viola and the arts. Playing the violin and viola for the past ten years, she is a very active participant in her local music community and has participated in the Mississippi Youth Symphony Orchestra for the past nine seasons and currently serves as the principal violist.


Kamilah studies at the Millsaps College Conservatory program with Alex Encinas and also serves as viola principal for the Belhaven Symphony Orchestra. In addition, she spent this past summer studying at the Sphinx Performance Academy at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Interlochen Arts Camp. At Interlochen, she was apart of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra and received the Valade teaching distinction which provided her the opportunity to work with the festival's top faculty.



Kamilah is a homeschooled student and for the last two years of high school she was dually enrolled at Holmes Community College. She holds a 4.3 GPA and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and ranked consistently on the Dean's list. At Holmes, Kamilah was recognized as the Literature Student of the Year by the Department of English and was awarded 2nd Place in the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association statewide contest. In the fall, Kamilah will attend Oberlin Conservatory studying with Peter Slowik. In her downtime, she enjoys baking, watching movies, and hanging out with friends. Congratulations, Kamilah!
